A workshop with representatives from 18 FUGs
was held to identify opportunities and constraints for forest
utilisation especially of NTFPs and to explore the possibility
of formation of a common interest network. During the workshop
experiences were discussed regarding local NTFP sales, opportunities
for establishment of NTFP-based enterprises and the prices
in Kathmandu for various NTFPs. The paper presents a list
of constraints and opportunities as well as the names of
a 9-member committee interested in exploring the possibilities
of joint marketing of NTFPs from their forests.
The workshop to identify opportunities for forest utilisation
was attended by 18 FUGs of Dandapakhar Range Post (Appendix
1). The objectives of the workshop were to:
| |
identify opportunities and
constraints for forest utilisation (particularly NTFPs) |
| |
explore formation of common
interest-group network of FUGs |
The Range Post had been selected to hold this
workshop at a meeting held with the DoF staff in Sindhu
Palchok District. The organising of the workshop had been
preceded by informal discussions with some FUGs a week before
the workshop. The Range Post has 34 FUGs, many of them in
high altitudes with potentially valuable medicinal plants
and Daphne. Many FUGs have in the past sold NTFPs for income
generation, thus have valuable experiences for others. The
FUGs had been informed about the meeting by the Range Post.
The Ranger was unavailable as he was attending a training
course at Chautara.
