This paper discusses the effectiveness of
the Cascade Training of Trainers (ToT) approach adopted
by the Nepal Australia Community Resource Management Project
to increase the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of
training in Forest User Group and community forest management.
The training model was introduced in 1998
and five ToT courses consisting of 67 training sessions,
each of 3 days duration, were conducted to the end of 2001.
A total of 119 trainers graduated from the first four courses.
A trainers training manual in eleven modules was published
in 2002. The graduates of the first ToT course formed a
district trainer network, the National Training Resource
Mobilisation Centre (NTRMC), in 1999, and since then have
conducted 163 training courses for a total of 2957 participants
(1877 males and 1080 females) on behalf of various government
and non-government organisations. The fifth ToT course,
run in 2000/01, was organised and conducted by the NTRMC.
The Cascade ToT approach has shown that it is possible to
develop a sustainable training planning process and a qualified
and dedicated trainer workforce.
