A study was done to examine the impact of
stocking and age on the growth of Pinus plantations, established
since 1978 and conservatively managed by FUGs in Sindhu
Palchok and Kabhre Palanchok. P. roxburghii and P. patula
were sampled over a range of stockings, ages and site qualities.
Core samples were collected by taking samples (0.5cm in
diameter) directly through the centre of each tree and a
caliper was used to measure the increment for each year's
growth.
The results clearly show that the annual increment of the
older stands is stagnating due to their high stocking densities.
Due to the proximity of the NACRMP districts to Kathmandu
where there is a high market demand for sawlogs and sawn
timber, and the relatively easy road access of a substantial
area of the plantation resource, there is a significant
lost opportunity cost by delaying thinning. This was valued
at Rs 15-20.000 per annum. The paper presents a set of recommended
thinning regimes for young and established plantations of
P. roxburghii and P. patula for application in similar accessible
plantation forest in the Mid Hills of Nepal.
